Fred was educated at Inverell District school and trained at the Hawkesbury Agricultural College, Richmond and the College's Experiment Farm at Cowra.
He was Senior Experimentalist in the Department of Agriculture at the time of enlistment, after a brilliant career at the Hawkesbury Agricultural College where he was Dux. His family was living at 'Lansdowne' Inverell.

Fred enlisted at Inverell in November 1915 and served in the 35th Battalion A.I.F.

He departed Sydney on the 'Port Sydney' 4 September 1916. He was made Lieutenant on 25 June 1916 in England. He arrived in France via England in August 1917.

His first cousin (Private 2558) Leslie Grundy died from Broncho Pneumonia in England in 1917.

Lieutenant Fred DITZELL was killed in action at Passchendaele in Belgium on 12 October 1917 age 26.
